A member of the College Opticians, she’s been in the eye care profession for 30 years and has worked with Dr. Miranda since 1999. Born and raised on Vancouver Island, Alisa has 2 children pursuing degrees in science and medicine, a dog named “Huck” and 2 cats. When she’s not helping our patients find the perfect eyewear for their vision and lifestyle needs, you can find her in her garden, cooking, running and spending time with her family.
A high school teacher by trade, Chelsea loves the people she works with here at our practice. She lived for many years in the city built on rock, Flin Flon, Manitoba, which was named after the fictional character, Flintabbatey Flonatin, and is home to the Flin Flon Bombers and a large copper and zinc mine. She brought a little piece of Manitoba here to the island in her dog, Lexi, a 9-year-old Shepherd/husky cross rescue dog from Northern Manitoba. She loves all the outdoor activities the island offers, from snowboarding to wakeboarding. When she’s not exploring Vancouver Island, she’s off travelling somewhere else.
Janine grew up and still lives in Cowichan Valley, where she’s been an optician since 1995. A member of the College of Opticians, she and her husband Warren, enjoy watching their son Kyler play hockey and baseball.
A former radio DJ in Nanaimo, Jaimie has a broad range of unique skills and knowledge including journalism and broadcasting and graduated with honours in Applied Business Technology from Vancouver Island University. A native of Pender Island, she joined our staff in 2011 and enjoys movies, books and hanging out with her wiener dog, Cooper.
A recent graduate from the University of Victoria with a Bachelor of Arts, Major in Art History with Distinction, Laura worked her way through school as a barista, picking up additional expertise in Lattes, Macchiatos and Americanos. A native of Campbell River, she loves Vancouver Island which has always been her home.
During her free time, Laura enjoys taking her dog Audi on adventures, hiking and exploring the wonderful oceans, mountains and forests of Vancouver Island. At home, you’ll find her cooking, baking and munching on popcorn, which always makes her feel better.
A proud geek who never wants to stop learning, Syd or Squid, or Syd the Squid, or Syd the Kid, has always been interested in science, particularly biology, so working in an optometry practice is a great fit. She loves the friendly faces that she gets to work with every day, as well as how technology is revolutionizing the level of eye care that we are able to provide to our patients.
Born in Calgary, her family moved to Smithers, a small town in northern BC, and then to Kamloops a few years later, but Sydnee has called Vancouver Island home for the last 6 years. Growing up on the prairies, she loves not having to worry about snow in July, having lakes, rivers and oceans to go for a dip in, and the forest where she feels most at peace. Aside from being named the MVP of her softball league, and serving as an extra in an episode of Honey I Shrunk the Kids, Syd has a wide range of hobbies from knitting to cooking and baking and hopes one day to become more self-sufficient by taking up gardening, canning, and hunting.
Darian Sernosky, native to the Cowichan Valley, was lovingly nicknamed “DarBear” by her mom and the name has stuck with her throughout the years. By high school, she was already a published author and graduated with Honours. At the University of Victoria, she continued to succeed academically and became enthralled by the medical field. Darian feels privileged to work in the field of optometry, as she loves learning new things every day and enjoys interacting with all of the amazing people at Cowichan Eyecare. When she “grows up,” she would love to be a psychologist specializing in mental disorders and is also interested in astronomy.
In her spare time, Darian loves crafting and drinking tea. She also plays Softball and was a proud Championship winner in a local non-competitive Softball League. As an avid traveller, with an appreciation for the old fashioned, Darian has a thirst for experiencing different cultures around the globe.
A native of New Zealand, who has travelled and worked in Europe, the UK and Africa, Cindy found her way to Cobble Hill Eye Care in April 2014 to join our staff. She keeps busy hiking, swimming, travelling, reading, ziplining, going to concerts, and watching her son playing ice hockey. With all of these activities she still finds time to take care of her son, a dog and 2 cats, and really loves to spend time with family and friends.
Duncan Location Staff
Born and raised on Vancouver Island, Erin moved to the Cowichan Valley in 1996 where she spends her time away from work hiking, mountain biking, gardening and relaxing with friends and family. A member of our staff since 2007, she gets satisfaction from using her experience to help our patients find the perfect pair of glasses, assisting them in seeing the world more clearly. Married with 2 children and lots of critters, Erin loves how the practice of optometry is constantly evolving, with technological advances, as well as meeting the latest fashion trends.
For this Cowichan Bay native, a meeting with Dr. Miranda on the golf course led to her recruitment to Cobble Hill Eyecare, where she conducts diagnostic testing, assists our doctors in the exam room, and does contact lens training. A graduate with Honors from Camosun College, Alicia enjoys painting and spending time with her family.
Donna grew up in St. Johns Newfoundland, which was an amazing place to grow as a child. She felt she needed to explore and found herself on the other side of Canada on a rock. She completed her CCOA (Canadian Certified Optometric Assistant) in June 2016. In her spare time, she enjoys hanging out with her family and Roxy, her beautiful little dog. Although Roxy is really sad when she leaves for work, she gets very excited when Donna returns home. Donna was very fortunate to be a part of optometry in 2004 and really enjoys the people and helping them make informed decisions. For Donna, the best place to live is in Canada, especially Vancouver Island, as the weather is great and usually no snow to shovel. One of her goals in life is to be one of those people that rescue, care for and find loving homes for animals in need.
Michelle joined our staff in the role of receptionist at our new Duncan office, and she’s already found that her favourite part of the job is interfacing with our fun staff and our great patients. With her interest in interior decorating and design, she also enjoys seeing the new eyewear fashions and trends which make her feel like she’s almost a part of the fashion industry.
A long time resident of Vancouver Island, Michelle feels lucky to live in such a beautiful place with so many outdoor activities right on her doorstep, and loves purchasing many of the local products at the fabulous downtown outdoor market. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with family, friends and her spoiled rescue cat Lily, exploring the great outdoors, especially the beach in the summer, mountain biking and hiking.
It pays to try and catch her when she’s at home because she’s an avid baker, and anyone who visits her home is always treated to some fresh baked goodies!
Brooklyn Minnie is one of our technicians at Cowichan, and is a native to the Cowichan valley, even though, she was born in Victoria and lived there until the age of 3. Vancouver island is one of her favorite places to live since there’s always something new and beautiful to discover
Her childhood nickname was Minnie Mouse (her last name is Minnie), which may have contributed to her love of the theatre. In high school, she received the highest theatre award, and even had an award named after her for outstanding leadership in theatre.
While she is directing Cowichan Secondary’s very first Theatre Alumni show, her other interests include going to the gym, yoga, dirt biking, reading and acting. She has one fluffy black cat named Cesar, who, unfortunately, offers no good stories as he’s a bit of a jerk. She’s glad to share her Hogwarts house is Slytherin even though they have a bad reputation.
Her goal is to become a Neonatal nurse in the NICU, and eventually become a nurse practitioner. Part of the reason she was interested in optometry, is that she loves that she can learn something new every day and enjoys a fast paced workplace. During her break, you might catch with her favorite snack: anything sweet paired with a bag of salty chips and a cold can of coke.
Brenda McAneeley, a born and bred Vancouver Island girl, works out of our Duncan office. She became interested in optometry when she witnessed the devastating effect that vision loss had for a family member. She loves to be able to be part of the process of improving vision for everyone and help patients try on fashionable frames.
As a shy child, Brenda was lovingly nicknamed “Boo” by her grandfather. She loves the beauty of the west coast and considers her home a wonderful place to enjoy nature. Her favorite snacks are anything healthy, and she enjoys drinking coffee since it perks her up. Her hobbies include reading, painting, traveling, gardening, and baking. She is a mother of three grown children. and a proud grandmother of two.
She hopes to eventually learn Spanish fluently and retire in Mexico. One of her dreams is to be a philanthropist like Oprah by giving her money away to worthy causes.

A life-long Duncan resident, Kelly has more than 10 years of optometry experience. She and her husband are self-described empty nesters with 3 grown children and a dog. They enjoy spending their free time with their family, boating, gardening and reading.
A native of Chemainus, Shelley has been our front desk person for more than 8 years after previous careers as a florist and hairdresser. With grown children who live nearby and a grandchild that is the light of her life, she still finds time to visit vintage markets and create beautiful items with her woodworking skills.
A technician on our team, Lauren, is learning something new every day and says that the best part of her job here at Cowichan Eyecare is getting to work with very knowledgeable and compassionate co-workers. A native of Port Hardy, she loves the relaxed vibe of living on Vancouver Island and is often seen adventuring in the surrounding area. In her spare time, you’ll find Lauren in one of her of many pursuits including crocheting, playing the ukulele, and of course chasing her (very busy) toddler.

Sarah, who works at our Lake Cowichan office, loves helping people to see better and feel great in glasses or contacts. She studied in the Applied Business Technology Program at Vancouver Island University and lives in Duncan with her husband Dan, and their pet Jack Russell, Sassy. Sarah is a dedicated outdoors person and in her free time she enjoys gardening, yoga, travelling, camping, hiking and biking.
During the past 15+ years spent in Hope BC, Sherry has done more than work for eye doctors. In her spare time, she also started a small home-based business called Rivers Edge Barkery, which specializes in making all-natural dog treats and was even featured on Global News. She has a beautiful Rottie named Bruin, the happiest dog there can be (well, who wouldn’t with a “mom” making him treats!) She feels that they are a perfect match for each other, as they both recently started a new on Vancouver Island. Sherry also enjoys Jeeping, hiking, furniture restoration, and photography. In fact, it was her appreciation of photography and each person’s unique view that brought her to optometry: “I enjoy when people can see their friends and family, and the beauty of everything around them clearer.”
